4 English Study Mistakes to Avoid

If you've been studying English for years and still feel like you are getting nowhere, you may be studying incorrectly. Learn the 4 most common English study mistakes and avoid them.

Most English learners have been studying English for many years, but many are studying with ineffective methods that don’t help them to get the results that they desire.

You already know that learning a language requires a lot of practice, but have you ever thought that maybe the way you are studying is not very effective?

If you’ve been putting in the hours, but still not getting the results you want then here are four common English study mistakes that you could be making.

Mistake #1: Thinking textbooks will help you reach fluency

Now, textbooks are great when you are a beginner. They teach you vocabulary words quickly and there are pictures as well for easy comprehension. You probably can read English perfectly thanks to textbooks, but once you reach an intermediate and advanced level, it’s time to put textbooks away and focus the majority of your study time on listening and speaking. You want to listen to content by native speakers regularly to improve your listening comprehension, but there is a right and wrong way to listen and that takes me to mistake number two.

Mistake #2: Watching too many different English lessons, TV shows, and movies

When learning a language, your goal should never be to watch as many English videos as possible. Instead, your goal should be to watch a few videos over and over again until you master the content. Mastery comes from repetition, so avoid consuming 100 hours of English videos. It is a waste of your time and will not make you fluent.

Mistake #3: Not Enough Repetition

Similar to mistake number two, it’s not about the quantity of videos, it’s about the quality of your study. It is better to watch one video 100 times than to watch 100 videos one time. Make sure you are repeating English lessons, audios, and videos until you master them. The more the better!

Mistake #4: No Study Plan

Many English learners are bouncing around studying at irregular times, getting content from a lot of different random places, and not repeating lessons. If you want to become fluent, you need to have a set plan of things that you want to work on and you need to be actively practicing those things repeatedly. I encourage you to set a study schedule, to practice daily, and to focus on studying just a few areas that you need improvement in. Be laser-focused on these materials until you master them. There’s no point in going to the next thing, if you haven’t mastered the first thing.
